I'm from Edinburgh and enjoyed a successful career in commercial property for over 25 years before deciding to pursue my dream of running my own business. I cut my teeth in a small shop in Broughton Street in 2015 and moved to larger premises in Bruntsfield in 2018; it's always been an area where I wanted a shop and it's fantastic to be in Bruntsfield which I consider the best of Edinburgh’s neighbourhood centres. There’s such a lovely mix of outlets, most of which are independents.

 

We sell jewellery, fashion accessories like scarves, gloves and handbags, cards and homewares such as throws, planters, lighting, candle holders and accessories. We try to introduce new lines regularly to keep the shop interesting for our ‘regulars’ while maintaining several ‘perennial’ lines that are popular all year round.

 

The main ethos of the business is to offer a wide range of gifts and other items that you won’t find everywhere else. I spend a large amount of time sourcing new products both online and at trade fairs. I am also committed to offering value for money and I firmly believe it is possible to buy a lovely gift without spending a fortune. Our customers often say they are pleasantly surprised by our prices (we are cheaper than they expected before coming into the shop for the first time) and we have several customers who return every time they need to buy a gift, together with those who return every Christmas.

 

One thing I’ve noticed over the years is the number of customers who make a point of ‘shopping local’. It is very heartening to hear customers saying things like “I expected to have to go in to town but I’ve been able to buy all my Christmas presents in one shop”. Retailing is challenging in the current economic climate so it is very encouraging that more and more people are recognising that they have to support their local independents if they want to enjoy a vibrant and varied local shopping experience.
